The PI: Dr. John Haan

haan-b.jpg

Dr. John Haan is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at California State University, Fullerton, where he has worked since 2011.  At CSUF, Dr. Haan has taught the following Chemistry classes: 100 (Survey of Chemistry), 120B (General Chemistry), 315 (Theory of Quantitative Analysis), 316 (Quantitative Analysis Laboratory), 411A (Spectroscopy), 411C (Separations), 411D (Electrochemistry), 490 (Internships), 492 (Sustainability Projects), and 511 (Advanced Analytical Chemistry).  In Chemistry 120B and 315, Dr. Haan uses a flipped classroom model that incorporates a workbook and pre-class assignments.

Prior to CSUF, Dr. Haan taught chemistry for 1 year at Towson University.  Dr. Haan earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010, M.S. in Chemical Education from University of Florida in 2005, and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999.  Between B.S. and M.S. degrees, he worked as a Faculty Teaching Assistant at UW for 2 years and a Process Engineer at SSI Technologies for 2 years.  More bio information at LinkedIn.

Research Collaborators: The Haan Research Lab places a high value on research collaboration.  Such collaboration: 1) gives us access to ideas and instrumentation we otherwise would not, 2) sparks high-level scientific discussions with experts in the fields of energy, chemistry, and engineering, and 3) affords an opportunity for our students to interact with Ph.D. candidate graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, scientists, and professors.  We have peer-reviewed publications and/or active collaboration with the following:

Students: The Haan Research Lab has graduate and undergraduate students working on 2 active project teams.

LAUREN HERNANDEZ

Lauren was born and raised in San Francisco and moved to Southern California to attend UC Irvine where she graduated with bachelor's in chemistry in 2016. There she worked with Professor Aaron Esser-Kahn in studying self-healing polymers and materials chemistry. This positive experience encouraged her to pursue a master's degree at CSUF, and she is excited to be working within the Haan lab on the development of small renewable organic molecules used in fuel cells. When she graduates, Lauren plans to pursue a PhD. program that will enable her to work in research and development, especially for institutions like NASA or the Department of Energy.
